An injection device (100) for injection of a medicament from a container (10) through a needle (16) disposed at the distal end of the container is disclosed. The container has a container body (12) and a stopper (22) for containing the medicament in the container body, and the device comprises a housing (110), a plunger (300) for driving the stopper (22) of the container in a distal direction to expel the medicament through the needle, a drive mechanism (330) arranged to apply an insertion force to the container upon activation of the drive mechanism, thereby to move the container relative to the housing (110) from a starting position in which the needle is shrouded to an insertion position in which the needle is exposed, and a carrier (220) for receiving the container body, the carrier (220) comprising a retardation element (224) arranged to contact the container body (12), wherein, upon activation of the drive mechanism, the container (10) moves in the distal direction with respect to the carrier (220), and wherein the retardation element (224 224a 624) is arranged to apply a frictional retardation force to the container body (12) to retard movement of the container (10) against the influence of the insertion force.
