A telemetry monitoring system 2 is provided comprising a central monitoring unit 4 configured to display data regarding one or more portable devices 6 each associated with breathing apparatus 10 of a user. The system further comprises a removable data storage device connected to the central monitoring unit 4 and configured to store system status data of the central monitoring unit as recovery data, the system status data defining an operational status of the central monitoring unit. In the event of a failure, the telemetry monitoring system 2 can be recovered by restoring recovery data to the central monitoring unit 4 or a replacement central monitoring unit 4, from the removable data storage device. The telemetry monitoring system 2 is particularly suited for use with firefighters and other rescue personnel. The central monitoring unit 4 may comprise an electronic control board (ECB). The portable devices 6 may comprise personal alert safety system (PASS) devices.
