Disclosed are sustained release oral pharmaceutical compositions which comprise dicycloverine hydrochloride (dicyclomine, [bicyclohexyl]-1-carboxylic acid 2-(diethylamine)ethyl ester), an anti-spasmodic, in both a core and a film coating of the composition. The core further comprises; one or more binders (e.g. celluloses, starches), one polymer present intragranular, one polymer present extragranular and one of more inactive excipients. The film coating comprises: dicycloverine or a salt thereof, a water soluble film forming polymer and one or more inactive excipients (e.g. plasticiser, opacifier, colouring agent). Both the intragranular polymer and the extragranular polymer may be either hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Preferably, the composition is in the form of a tablet. Also claimed is a method for preparing a sustained release oral pharmaceutical composition.
