An agricultural implement (20) includes a chassis (31) and a shank (32) carried by the chassis (31). The shank (32) includes a shank body (50) configured to penetrate a soil top surface (28); a sensor (52) attached to an outer surface of the shank body (50) that defines a probing area (62); and a sensor shield (56) carried by the shank body (50) in front of the sensor (52), the sensor shield (56) being configured to deflect oncoming soil flow away from the sensor (52) without substantially disrupting soil flow into the probing area (62).
