599522 Disclosed is a system for detecting an analyte in a bodily fluid from a subject and employing two-way communication between a test device and an external device. The test device is comprised of a sample collection unit, an assay assembly and an identifier configured to provide the identity of the device. The sample collection unit is configured for collecting a sample of bodily fluid suspected to contain the analyte. The assay assembly contains reactants that react with the sample of bodily fluid based on a protocol received from an external device to yield a detectable signal indicative of the presence and/or concentration of the analyte. The external device is configured to receive information about the identifier from the test device, select the protocol based on the identifier and transmit the protocol to the external device. The external device is also configured to receive information regarding the signal and calculate the analyte concentration in the sample of bodily fluid using the information regarding the signal.
