The present invention relates to a novel class of 4-carboxybenzylaminoderivatives. The 4-carboxybenzylaminocompounds can be used to treat cancer. The 4-carboxybenzylamino compounds canalso inhibit histone deacetylase and are suitablefor use in selectively inducing terminal differentiation, and arresting cellgrowth and/or apoptosis of neoplastic cells, therebyinhibiting proliferation of such cells. Thus, the compounds of the presentinvention are useful in treating a patient having atumor characterized by proliferation of neoplastic cells. The compounds of theinvention may also be useful in the prevention andtreatment of TRX-mediated diseases, such as autoimmune, allergic andinflammatory diseases, and in the prevention and/or treatmentof diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), such as neurodegenerativediseases. The present invention further providespharmaceutical compositions comprising the 4-carboxybenzylamino derivativesand safe dosing regimens of these pharmaceuticalcompositions, which are easy to follow, and which result in a therapeuticallyeffective amount of the 4-carboxybenzylaminoderivatives in vivo.
