Disclosed is an isolated, synthetic or purified peptoid reagent capable of interacting preferentially with a pathogenic form of a conformational disease protein as compared to a nonpathogenic form of the conformational disease protein, the peptoid reagent having a formula of: Xa-(Q)n-Xb) wherein: -(Q)n- defines a peptoid region comprising a sequence selected from the group consisting of: SEQ ID NO: 229, SEQ ID NO: 230, SEQ ID NO: 237, SEQ ID NO: 238, SEQ ID NO: 239, and SEQ ID NO: 240 or a variant of any one of said sequences wherein a single amino acid residue thereof is substituted such that said peptoid region comprises N-(4-aminobutyl) glycine at position 2 or (S)-N-(1-phenylethyl) glycine at position 2 or N-(4-aminobutyl) glycine at position 3 or N-(4-guanidinobutyl) glycine at position 3 or N-(4-aminobutyl) glycine at position 4 or (S)-N-(1-phenylethyl) glycine at position 4 or N-benzyl glycine at position 4 or N-(4-aminobutyl) glycine at position 5 or (S)-N-(1-phenylethyl) glycine at position 5 or (S)-N-(1-phenylethyl) glycine at position 6 or N-benzyl glycine at position 6 Xa is absent or selected from the group consisting of: H, (C 1 -C6)alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, (C1-C6)acyl, amino(C1-6)acyl, an amino acid, an amino protecting group, and a polypeptide of 2 to 100 amino acids in length, and wherein Xb if present is optionally substituted by a conjugate moiety that is optionally attached through a linker moiety and Xb is absent or an amino acid that is optionally substituted by a conjugate moiety that is optionally attached through a linker moiety.
