PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for observing the wave front of an elastic body which is compact and can be inserted to the inside of a biological tissue such as an internal organ etc. by a simple structure and which is suitable for detecting a foreign object such as a stiffness, a tumor, a marker existing inside of the biological tissue or an abnormal tissue without contacting, and to provide a method for observing the wave front of the elastic body.

SOLUTION: The apparatus for observing the elastic body wave surface, which detects nonuniformity of the density or hardness inside the elastic body from an oscillation wave front generated at the elastic body, has a nozzle which gives a pulse-like gas or liquid jet or a sine-wave-like gas or liquid jet to an observation section of the elastic body a stroboscope for flicker-illuminating the observation section with a prescribed period and a photographing apparatus for photographing the oscillation wave front of the observation section.
