PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition and a food composition containing Santalum album extract of a fraction thereof for preventing neurodegenerative diseases are provided to effectively suppress acetylcholine esterase activity and nerve inflammation. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases contains Santalum album extract or a fraction thereof as an active ingredient. The extract is an ethanol crude extract prepared using water, low alcohol of C1-C4, or a mixture thereof. The fraction is an ethyl acetate soluble fraction, butanol soluble fraction, or water soluble fraction of the crude extract. A method for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases comprises a step of administering the composition to an individual with neurodegenerative diseases or risk of developing the diseases.
