Disclosed are α7β1 integrin modulators and methods of using them to treat conditions associated with decreased α7β1 integrin expression or activity, such as muscular dystrophy. In one example, a method of treating a subject with muscular dystrophy is disclosed. The method comprises administering to a subject with muscular dystrophy an effective amount of an α7β1 integrin modulator, wherein the α7β1 integrin modulator compares the expression or activity of α7β1 integrin with the α7β1 integrin expression or activity prior to treatment. By increasing the amount, a subject having muscular dystrophy is treated. Also disclosed are methods of promoting muscle regeneration, repair or maintenance in a subject and methods of promoting α7β1 integrin expression using the disclosed α7β1 integrin modulators.
