Disclosed is a beverage making system, a container therefor, and a method of forming a beverage. The container comprises a first chamber (4a) that is sealed and contains a carbon dioxide (CO2) source (41). The source may be in solid form, containing adsorbed carbon dioxide. The container has a top which is piercable by a beverage making machine to form an inlet and outlet therein. The inlet allows fluid to be provided to cause the carbon dioxide source to emit carbon dioxide gas. The outlet allows the gas to exit the container for use in carbonating a precursor liquid used to form a beverage.
