The present invention describes the fabrication of a multifunctional polyolefin metal solid lubricant composite yarn having negative buoyancy, high abrasion resistance, low coefficient of friction and resistance to micro and macro fouling. The claim discloses that the composite yarn comprises at least one of each of the following, a polyolefin, ultrafine metal particles, a solid lubricant powder and a coupling agent. The yarn can be used to make fishing lines or nets. The polyolefin should preferably comprise at least 75% of the yarn. Both the metal particles and solid lubricant should preferably comprise 0.1%-25% of the yarn. The coupling agent and site catalyst may comprise 0.1%-10% and 0-10% of the yarn respectively. The specific gravity of the yarn should be above 0.95. Ideally, the polyolefin is high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene or polypropylene. The metal particles may have a diameter of less than 120 microns and may be copper, zinc, lead, molybdenum, tungsten, nickel and alloys of metals. The solid lubricant may have a particle size of less than 120 microns and may be graphite, molybdenum disulphide, tungsten disulphide, copper oxide, zinc oxide or boron nitride. The coupling agent may be maleic anhydride modified polyethylene or ethylene vinyl acetate. The yarn may comprise a site catalyst.
