The device switch forwards messages between autonomous devices in the medical environment. In a medical environment, autonomous devices perform various tasks such as controlling surgical devices, injecting drugs, recording moving images, and user interfaces. Each autonomous device has a device specification that can be used by other autonomous devices that are issued and stored by the device switch. The device specification indicates an identifier, a set of outputs, and a set of inputs or commands for each autonomous device. Because each message is based on a published device specification that is available on all devices connected to the switch, the device will not have a device identifier and output without interpretation or conversion mechanisms such as scripts, protocol conversions, drivers or interface modules. Or it cooperates by the message containing the command.
