Described herein are dressings that include composite islands that include a polyurethane or foam layer bonded to an absorbent layer that includes non-woven gelled fibers. Also described herein is a dressing that includes an absorbent layer that includes carboxymethyl cellulose fibers and a backing layer that is bonded to the absorbent layer. In each dressing, the absorbent layer is not substantially elastically deformable under tissue treatment conditions, while the polyurethane or foam layer and the backing layer are not substantially elastically deformable under tissue treatment conditions. By bonding the absorbent layer to the polyurethane/foam layer or backing layer, the entire bonded structure or dressing is substantially elastically deformable under tissue treatment conditions. Also described herein are methods for removing, minimizing, or reducing edema.
