A plant extract, derived from a Salvia spp., preferably Salvia militiorrhiza bunge, comprising one or more tanshinone compounds, or one or more tanshinone compounds, including a CYP11B1 inhibitory amount of tanshinone I and/or dihydrotanshinone, for use in the treatment of wounds or Cushings syndrome, is provided. Preferably the wound is a chronic wound selected from chronic wounds associated with diabetes, chronic wounds associated with prolonged pressure, chronic wounds associated with radiation burns or where the chronic wound is a venous or arterial ulcer. Preferably the plant extract derived from a Salvia spp. comprises cryptotanshinone, dihydrotanshinone, tanshinone I and tanshinone IIA characterised in that the identified tanshinone compounds comprise at least 15%, by weight, of the plant extract and the cryptotanshinone comprises at least 4% by weight of the plant extract. A pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition comprising tanshinone I and/or dihydrotanshinone or an extract of Salvia spp. containing the same in an amount that will inhibit CYP11B1 by at least 64% is also outlined.
