Disclosed is a breath activated dry powder inhaler device which uses shear driven cavity flow effect to empty a cavity (5) comprising medicament (2) and entrain the medicament (2) in the air flow for delivery to a patient. The inhaler comprises a flow passage (4) and a powder storage cavity (5). The cavity (5) has an opening (20) located in the wall (7) of the flow passage (4). The flow passage (4) is arranged to direct a flow of air across the cavity opening (20). The cavity (5) has a quadrilateral shape which is either rectangular or trapezoidal. The length (10) of the cavity opening (20) in the flow direction (F) is between 50% and 100% of the cavity depth (22) and at least 80% of the maximum length (10) of the cavity (5). The maximum height (13) of the flow passage (4) adjacent the cavity (5) is between 0.5mm and 4mm.
