ABSTRACT A bilayered thin film drug comprising a bisphosphonate drug incorporated into a polymer matrix formed by a first polymer and a second polymer resulting a first layer, an adhesive backing membrane comprising ethyl cellulose to form a second layer and a plasticizer holding the first and second layers together to form the bilayered thin film drug, wherein, the bilayered thin film drug enables controlled release of the bisphosphonate drug through the first and second polymers of the first layer by means of oral muco- adhesive administration resulting enhanced bioavailability of the drug and improved patient compliance. In an embodiment, the first polymer comprises hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC-4KM) whereas the second polymer comprises thiolated chitosan. The adhesive backing membrane comprises a homogeneous solution of at least 1g of ethyl cellulose with diethyl phthalate (2% w/w) in 20 ml of acetone.
