PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic locking mechanism for a wheelchair which is easily attached and reliably locks.SOLUTION: The automatic locking mechanism for a wheelchair includes: a gear 32 fitted to an axle of a main wheel of the wheelchair a movable part 35 having an engagement part 33 to abut on the gear 32 so as to prevent the rotation and a sensing plate laid beneath a cushion so as to sense the body weight of a seated person. The sensing plate includes a pressure board and a support board with a sliding member arranged therebetween. The sliding member to which a wire 25 is connected is slid when the pressure board is lowered by the load of the body weight of the seated person. The gear 32 fitted to the main wheels connected to the wire 25 is disengaged from the engagement part 33 engaged with the gear 32.
