PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem in that a sintered zirconia satisfying both high strength and high aesthetic appreciation derived from translucency has not been prepared, although the sintered zirconia containing Y2O3as a stabilizer is expected to be usable as a structural material for machines or dentistry materials due to its high strength and high toughness.

SOLUTION: A sintered zirconia having a high total light transmission of 43% (thickness of 0.5 mm) or above and a high average strength of 1,700 MPa or above is produced by subjecting a primary sintered material, which is prepared from a zirconia powder containing yttria fine particles and has a relative density of 95% or above, to HIP sintering at 1,200 to 1,600°C under a pressure of 50 MPa or above.
