The present invention relates to abuse deterrent pharmaceutical compositions which may also provide controlled release. Said abuse deterrent pharmaceutical compositions consist of a matrix composition and optionally a cosmetic coat, said matrix composition comprising a homogenous mixture of: (a) 1-50% w/w of an active drug substance (b) 20-98% w/w of a polyethylene oxide (PEO) and (c) optionally a plasticizer, wherein the abuse deterrent pharmaceutical composition exhibits a hardness that is resistant to physical tampering. The present invention also relates to the use of said abuse deterrent pharmaceutical compositions in the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of pain.
