The present disclosure provides for an apparatus and related method for controlling the rate of nicotine delivery into systemic circulation of a subject. The method comprises transdermally administering nicotine at a topical administration site of a subject achieving a steady state plasma concentration of nicotine in the subject and activating a temperature modification apparatus over the topical administration site after achieving the steady state. The temperature modification apparatus can be configured to generate heat for a predetermined period of time. Further, about 5 to about 30 minutes following activation of the temperature modification apparatus, the subjects nicotine plasma concentration increases by at least about 5% over the subjects steady state nicotine plasma concentration.
