A method and device for preventing blockages in the flow paths of a separatorduring the processing of a fat-containing initial product, particularly milk,determine, inorder to identify an impending blockage, the concentration of the fat contentof anoutflowing product phase. When a predetermined fat content limit value isreached orexceeded, the separating zone in the separator drum is then shifted away bymodifyingthe operating parameters whereby preventing a blockage over a predeterminedminimumperiod of time.
