Manufacture of a culture medium involves mixing a particulate base material with a thermoplastic binding agent, heating at least the binding agent in order to at least partly fluidize it and cooling the mixture to bond the base material with the binding agent. Manufacturing a culture medium on which plants can be grown comprises: (1) mixing a particulate base material selected from at least one of organic and inorganic materials, with a thermoplastic biologically degradable binding agent (2) heating at least the binding agent in order to at least partly fluidize it (3) cooling the mixture so as to substantially solidify the binding agent and where at least a part of the base material becomes bonded by means of the binding agent.
