A method for preventing or treating Parkinson's disease (PD), comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of at least one of guggulsterone, kinurenoy acid, or kenpaullon. A method according to claim 1, characterized in that guggulsterone is administered orally or by injection. A method according to claim 1, characterized in that guggulsterone is administered intravenously. A method for preventing the progression of PD, which comprises administering to a subject in need of a therapeutically effective amount of at least one of the following: guggulsterone, kinurenoy acid, or kenpaullon. 5. A method according to claim 4, characterized in that guggulsterone is administered orally or by injection. A method according to claim 4, characterized in that guggulsterone is administered intravenously. A method for modulating the activity of dopaminergic neurons in a subject in need thereof, which comprises contacting dopaminergic neurons with at least one of the following: guggulsterone, kinurenoy acid or kenpaullon, thereby modulating the activity of dopaminergic neurons. 8. A method according to claim 7, characterized in that the activity of dopaminergic neurons is stimulated or increased. A method according to claim 7, characterized in that the activity of dopaminergic neurons is the functioning of neurons, the survival of neurons, or the proliferation of axons.
