The present invention relates to an intestinal barrier, comprising an elongate polymeric sleeve at least 20 cm in length and extending between proximal and distal open ends, the polymeric sleeve configured to be positioned in an intestine, and a self-expandable frame at least partially encapsulated by the elongate polymeric sleeve and configured to transform from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration to exert an outward pressure against the surrounding walls of the intestine to anchor the intestinal barrier in the intestine, where the sleeve acts as an absorption barrier within the intestine.
