A recombinant Bordetella pertussis strain originating from the parent strain Tohama is provided. The segment encoding the PT subunit S1 has been replaced and introduces two mutations that cause inactivation of the toxic activity of PT. The strain may be further modified to express increased amounts of rPT and / or PRN.
