PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a tertiary alcohol derivative of high optical purity from a racemic tertiary alcohol derivative or a tertiary alcohol derivative of low optical purity.SOLUTION: Provided is a method for producing an optically active tertiary alcohol, comprising: reacting a tertiary alcohol derivative such as (±)-methyl 2-hydroxy-3,3-dimethylbutanoate and an isocyanic acid ester such as isocyanic acid n-propyl isocyanate to convert a portion of the tertiary alcohol derivative into a carbamate in the presence of a metallic compound and a compound such as (s)-2,2-isopropylidene-bis(4-t-butyl-2-oxazoline) which can coordinate with a metallic compound; and separating the tertiary alcohol derivative which is not converted into a carbamate from the tertiary alcohol derivative which is converted into a carbamate.
