PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an oxygen absorbent which can give an oxygen-absorbing container which is nonproblematic in the generation of hydrogen, does not suffer surface irregularities even after a long-term storage or sterilization, and keeps excellent appearance characteristics by using an iron powder, a metal halide, and an alkaline substance having a specified or lower water solubility.SOLUTION: The alkaline substance used has a water solubility of 10 wt.% or below at 25°C. The oxygen absorbent is obtained by simply mixing an iron powder with the alkaline substance with e.g. a vibration mill, ball mill or tube mill, or by coating the surface of an iron powder with a metal halide and the alkaline substance. The iron powder used is desirably one having a mean particle diameter of 10-200 &mum. The metal halide used is exemplified by a halide of e.g. an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and in addition, copper, zinc, and iron.
