Disclosed are cyclodextrin compositions including an inclusion complex formed by the encapsulation of 1-methylcyclopropene (compound I) by alpha cyclodextrin, and one or more polymerizable monomers selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, alkyl esters of acrylic acid, and alkyl esters of methacrylic acid. Disclosed are methods of coating the cyclodextrin composition and exposing the cyclodextrin composition to electromagnetic radiation, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation, or electron beam (e-beam) radiation to form packaging materials and containers capable of releasing controlled amounts of 1-methylcyclopropene to act as an olefinic inhibitor of ethylene generated by produce and plant materials, thus prolonging their storage and lifetime.
