The method for inhibiting sprouting of potatoes according to the present invention comprising the steps of: (A) washing potatoes stored at a temperature of 2 to 15°C under the atmosphere of an ethylene concentration of 1 to 100 ppm for 3 to 12 months with water to remove soil and dirt, draining, and, if necessary, drying (B) receiving the potatoes together with an ethylene generating package having an ethylene generating rate of 0.5 to 5 ml/(g · day) in a distribution container of a polyolefin bag having pores on its surface prior to tight sealing of the bag and (C) maintaining the ethylene concentration in 1 to 100 ppm at a temperature of 2 to 30°C for 1 to 20 days within the distribution container having the potatoes sealed tightly. According to the present invention, the sprouting of potatoes can be effectively inhibited in the course from the harvest, storage, distribution stages to consumers.
