A controlled release formulation containing a pharmaceutical agent, a solubilizer a water swellable polymer and other inactive ingredients. The water swellable polymer is chosen such a way that the release of the pharmaceutical agent should be in controlled manner in the presence of the solubilizer. The other inactive ingredients may include such as diluerits, fillers, binders, lubricants or giants. The above said solubilizer may be one of these examples like cyclodextrin, poly vinyl pirrolidone, surfactants, low substituted HPC, gelucires or other solubilizers. one or more hydrophilic polymers used in accordance with the invention can be selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide, hydroxypropy methylcellulose, hydroxy ethyl cellulose, hydroxy propyl methylcellulose, hydroxy propyl methylcellulose phthalate and methylcellulose. The pharmaceutical agent in the invention include drugs such as carbamazepine, and such other poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients which require controlled release formulation.
