A tree tie 10 comprises a strip of a plastics material, and connection 12, 18 means whereby the strip can be formed into a closed loop, wherein the strip includes an indicator portion 26 of reduced thickness. The thickness of the indicator portion maybe less than 30% of the thickness of the majority of the strip. Tension in the strip, caused by a tree, with which the tie is used, growing may cause the indicator portion to split, forming a hole, the presence of the hole indicating that the tie is too tight. Upon the tree growing further the tree tie may split or break, therefore releasing the tie from the tree.
