A process for the preparation of a synthetic bone composite biomaterial. The process comprises: - Providing a solid component that comprises one or more of collagen, a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), albumin, hyaluronan, chitosan and synthetic collagen and optionally an inorganic material. The solid component has a surface that is porous - Providing a fluid composition that comprises one or more of collagen, a GAG, albumin, hyaluronan, chitosan and synthetic collagen and optionally an inorganic material - Contacting the fluid composition with the solid component - Cooling the fluid composition to a temperature at which the liquid carrier transforms into solid crystals or particles and - Removing at least some of the solid crystals or particles by sublimation and/or evaporation. The inorganic material is typically a calcium phosphate material such as brushite, octacalcium phosphate and apatite.
