A system for testing for contamination in an assembly line cultivation pod includes a tray moving along a track disposed in the assembly line cultivation pod, a plurality of cells disposed on the tray, and a contamination sensor. Each cell supports seeds, plants, or both, and the selected cell includes side walls and a foundation defining a cavity. The contamination sensor is placed in the pupil in the selected cell. The contamination sensor includes a sensing device and a control device. The sensing device directly detects the characteristics of the content present in association with the selected cell. The control device is connected to the sensing device and is operable to receive a signal from the sensing device.
