PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of coloring a material which realizes predictable coloring, allows the number of contacts to be reduced to provide wash durable and light durable color and keeps minimum damage to the material, e.g., the hair.SOLUTION: The method comprises the steps of: a) applying to the material a composition comprising a sulfur-containing nucleophile, the composition comprising at least one thiol and at least one sulfite-containing species and b) applying to the material a composition comprising a dye compound selected from a dye class other than the class of reactive dyes.
