A personal portable monitor (PHHM) is disclosed that includes a signal acquisition device for acquiring signals that can be used to obtain a measurement of a patient's blood pressure (BP), the signal acquisition device being integrated with a personal handheld computing device (PHHCD) . The signal acquisition device comprises blood flow occlusion means adapted to be pressed against only one side of the body portion or to have only one side of the body portion pressed against it, and means for measuring the pressure applied to or by the body portion, and And means for contacting the blood flow occlusion means to detect the flow of blood through the body portion. The blood flow occlusion means comprises at least a portion of the outer surface of the PHHM, wherein the pressure is sensed by a flexible and essentially non-compressible gel contained in the pressure sensor.
