The present invention provides a fundus imaging apparatus (100). Such an apparatus includes an illumination optical system (103, 104) for projecting illumination light on a fundus of an eye to be examined and an imaging optical system (104, 105) for guiding reflected light from the fundus to an imaging means. The imaging optical system has an optical path in which a focus lens (28) is driveable, the focus lens being for focusing the reflected light onto the imaging means. A diopter correction lens may be provided in this optical path if the eye being examined is myopic or hyperopic. There is further provided a focusing means (31, 33, 36, 22) for detecting a focal position of the reflected light based on a signal from said imaging means and for driving the focus lens according to the detected focal position. In order to deal with focusing difficulties when a diopter correction lens is provided in the optical path, selection means (S102 - S110, S11 - S114) are provided for selecting a focal position detection method to be used by said focusing means in accordance with whether the diopter correction lens is inserted in the optical path or not.
