To a method and apparatus for providing automated control for respiratory pressure treatment devices such as servo ventilators. For example, the controller of the respiratory pressure treatment apparatus can be controlled to apply pressure assisted ventilation therapy to the patient's airway. The control device can automatically titrate exhaled airway positive pressure (EPAP) of pressure assisted ventilation therapy so as to control the respiratory pressure treatment device so as to maintain the airway patency of the patient. The lower limit of the EPAP may be limited by the lower limit pressure. The control device can control the respiratory pressure treatment device to repeatedly adjust the lower limit pressure in response to an event of interest during the automatic titration of the EPAP.
