Systems and methods for determining hearing thresholds of people are described, the methods including the steps of: presenting an auditory stimulus of a duration of less than one second to the person wherein the power of the stimulus is spread across a frequency range in alternating regions of high and low intensity and wherein the stimulus includes at least two regions of high intensity and measuring the transient evoked electrical response of the brain of the person.
