The present invention relates to an improved composition for cryopreservation of mammalian sperm, more specifically porcine, camel, bovine and equine sperm, comprising (i) a penetrating cryoprotecting agent selected within the group comprising a polyol having 4 - 7 C-atoms, and (ii) a cyclodextrin-cholesterol-complex and possibly saccharides, proteins and/or antibacterial agents, buffer compositions and antioxydants. The invention composition shows improved quality and extended preservation of quality after thawing, improved preservation of sperm fertility, allows for extended delay prior to freezing collected sperm samples and for higher sperm concentrations in the composition without affecting sperm quality after thawing.
