A cleaning material (130) is disposed on an external surface (102) of the extension member (101) such as at least one jaw member (110, 120) or disposed on the shaft (102). The first surgical instrument (100) and the second surgical instrument (200) define a distance between each other. The cleaning material (130) is configured to clean at least a portion of at least a second surgical instrument (200) in proximity to the first surgical instrument (100) when the distance between the first surgical instrument (100) and the second surgical instrument (200) is reduced. A corresponding method of cleaning the second surgical instrument (200) with the cleaning material (130) of the first surgical instrument (100) is also disclosed.
