A wearable device for monitoring the health of an animal is described. The wearable device may include one or more sensors whose resultant signal levels may be analysed in the wearable device in order to provide a pet owner, veterinarian, or other party with content useful in monitoring the pet’s overall condition. One or more embodiments include variations of an ultra-wideband (UWB) system to accommodate differences in animals. One or more embodiments include adjusting a sensitivity of a receiver based on a sensor profile corresponding to a breed of the animal. One or more embodiments also relate to the sensor signals being used to determine a heart rate of the animal and adjusting a dynamic window for monitoring the heart rate of the animal based on processing the received signals. The wearable device provides a pet owner and/or a veterinarian with comprehensive information regarding a pet or other animal’s current status such that the pet owner and/or veterinarian may better understand the wellness of a pet through non-invasive remote monitoring in a stable home environment to pick up subtle vital signs indicators that could be precursors to developing health conditions.
