The present invention relates to an improved method for the preparation of hollowcellulose vessels produced by a microorganism, and hollow cellulose vesselsprepared by this method. The method is characterized by the culturing of the cellulose-producingmicroorganisms being performed on the outer surface of a hollow carrier, andproviding an oxygen containing gas on the inner side of the hollow carrier, theoxygen containing gas having an oxygen level higher than atmospheric oxygen.The hollow microbial cellulose vessels of the present invention are characterizedby improved mechanical properties and can be used in surgical procedures to replaceor repair an internal hollow organ such as the urethra, ureter, the trachea, adigestive tract, a lymphatic vessel or a blood vessel.
