The protruding region identification unit identifies a protruding region at which the similar curve is positioned in the direction of depth of the fundus with respect to the layer region and the distance between the layer region and the similar curve in the direction of depth is at least a predetermined threshold. The joint region identification unit identifies a joint region that includes the protruding region and is encircled by the layer region and the similar curve.
