#$%^&*AU2014202420A120140529.pdf#####ABSTRACT A smoke evacuation system for use during a medical procedure, said system comprising: a chassis a conduit that extends from the chassis, said conduit including an inlet into which air that includes smoke generated during a medical/surgical procedure is drawn a filter in fluid communication with said conduit, said filter including: a filter enclosure that is removably mounted to said chassis at least one filter element disposed in said filter enclosure for filtering smoke from the air flowed through said filter enclosure and a smoke sensor disposed in said filter enclosure so as to be replaced when said filter is replaced, said smoke sensor sensing the level of smoke in the air flow through said filter enclosure and output a smoke signal representative of the level of the sensed smoke a pump in fluid communication with said conduit for drawing air into the inlet of said conduit and through the filter a variable speed motor for operating the pump a controller electrically connected to said motor for providing electrical power to said motor to control the speed of said motor and to receive from said smoke sensor the smoke signal, wherein: when the smoke signal indicates that the detected smoke is below a predetermined limit, said controller causes said motor to run at a first speed so that the pump draws suction at a first level, the first suction level being sufficient to draw air into the conduit so that smoke can be sensed by said smoke sensor and when the smoke signal indicates that the detected smoke is above the predetermined limit, said controller causes said motor to operate at a second speed, the second speed being higher than the first speed so that said pump draws suction at a second level, the second suction level being higher than the first suction level.1/58 CDC o 0o CC CL CDD COC C) C)
