A muucosal impedance measuring apparatus, comprises an elongated catheter 10 for fitting through an upper oesophogal sphincter (UES) into an oesophagus lumen and with a distal end being adjacent to or fitting through a lower oesophogal sphincter (LES), a catheter tube 12, a multiplicity of impedance sensor electrodes 40 positioned in axially spaced locations along an exterior surface of the catheter for providing multiple axially spaced channels of measurement of mucosal impedance at a multiplicity of longitudinally spaced locations along the inside wall of the oesophagus, an inflatable and deflatable balloon 80 mounted on the catheter tube and configured on inflation to press the sensor electrodes against the mucosal inside wall 84 of the oesophagus, processing electronics for detecting impedance signals transmitted through the oesophagal mucosa between the impedance sensor electrodes to obtain impedance values of the mucosa at a multiplicity of longitudinal locations of the inside wall of the oesophagus, and a display for receiving mucosal impedance data and for displaying mucosal impedance variation with location distance from the lower oesophogeal sphincter along the length of the oesophagus.
