Apparatus for use in performing impedance measurements on a subject comprising - respective pairs of excitation and detection electrodes for placement on upper and lower extremities of the subject; and - a processing system that is configured to: a) result in voltage excitation signals being applied to the subject, by means of excitation electrodes; b) detecting, by means of detection electrodes, current signals through the subject that are caused by the voltage excitation signals; c) determining an indication of a second signal through the subject, said indication of said second signal being a voltage from the center of the body at the center of the torso of the subject that is obtained from voltages that are detected by means of electrodes detection; d) use the indication of the second signal to determine if there is an unacceptable imbalance; and, e) if there is an unacceptable imbalance: i) determine modified voltage excitation signals according to the imbalance determined by: determining higher and lower impedances for the subject using the detected current signals, the voltage excitation signals and the tension of the center of the body; and, determining modified voltage excitation signals using said upper and lower impedances and an ideal current signal indication; and, ii) result in the modified voltage excitation signals being applied to the subject to thereby allow at least one impedance measurement to be made.
