A magnetic stimulation system comprises the following elements. A pulse generating device is configured to generate and deliver current pulses to a stimulating coil. The stimulating coil, in response to the current pulses, generates magnetic field pulses capable of inducing approximately rectangular electric field pulses in a body organ. An active snubber circuit electrically coupled to the stimulating coil dissipates energy in the stimulation coil. The snubber circuit includes at least one control input configured to allow current to pass in a first and a second direction therethrough in response to selective activation of the control input and a controller connected to the control input and configured to selectively activate the control input to dissipate the energy.
