A method to improve the function and performance of the mushroom bed whichcomprises nutritionally supplementingthe mushroom bed by mixing very small amounts of carboxylic acid salts intothe casing layer or on the surface of thecompost in close proximity to the casing layer of chalk and peat soils ascommercially utilized. The salt may be derived from analiphatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic or aromatic carboxylic acid and mixturesthereof. The cations may include potassium magnesiumand preferably calcium and mixtures thereof for both casing additions andcompost surface application. For compost surface additionsonly, ammonia and organic amines may also be used as cations. The carboxylicsalts may be mixed with other nutrient substancesto further improve performance.
