Copper-based antibacterial agents based on amphiphilic copper complexes formed between copper and hydroxypyrones, such as maltol, are described. In a further aspect, the present invention relates to PEG-based ointments, which show that they are particularly effective for local delivery of amphiphilic complexes of copper. In particular, PEG ointment has been shown to limit bacterial growth, even in the absence of a copper agent. However, it has been shown herein that this bacteriostatic effect is a true bactericidal effect when copper hydroxypyrones are added to PEG.
